Versioning

This article is considered accurate for the current version (3.9.1) of the game.

In The Wild West, there is a day-night cycle. Currently, the cycle lasts for twenty minutes. "Day" (6:00 AM-5:59 PM) takes eight minutes to complete with one in-game minute passing every two thirds of a real-time second. The "Night" phase takes twelve minutes to complete, with one in-game minute passing every real-time second.

Prior to Halloween 2023, the day-night cycle was eighteen minutes long, with a twelve minute day, and a six minute night.

During Halloween 2019, night lasted from 6:00 AM-5:59 AM (eternally night). During the other Halloween events, night time was increased to twelve real-time minutes, with the entire cycle lasting 24 minutes per day.

Time Event
6:00 AM Day starts, Skeleton Horses & the Wendigo vanish.
6:00 PM Night starts, Skeleton Horses can be called, and a Blood Moon has a chance of occurring.

Clocks[]

Although the map is scattered with clocks, none of them are able to display the time as they all share a peculiarity: they all miss the hands that should display the exact time. Clear examples of this can be seen on the Auburn Hall clocktower and inside the Bronze City Saloon, where a large grandfather clock sits still against the wall with an empty dial.

As of now, the only working clock is a clock found within the Callahan's Point train station, and the one visible underneath the minimap in the corner of the screen.

Temporality[]

Several sources state that the game is set somewhere between 1865 and 1912, including the now-defunct Frequently Suggested list. There is no exact date or location in which the game appears, though the flora and fauna seen are common to those found from Washington to Montana to New Mexico. Locations such as the Forts appear to be based off of forts from the American Civil War, no longer in military use. Some weapons are partially or entirely fictional, while others may have first been designed or produced in real life in 1915. Car parts can be found in Callahan's Manor, but the most complete car is the DeLorean, being a Back to the Future Part III reference. Dates in the Church and Dead Man's Rest are also often references, including Back to the Future, Red Dead Redemption, and others. Various businesses in Bronze City include establishment dates on their signs.

Blood Moon[]

The Blood Moon is an extremely rare event that causes the moon and sky to turn red. When the blood moon rises, the Wendigo has a chance of spawning. This phenomenon had a 100% chance of occurring during the 2021 Halloween Event, when it was first introduced, and had a high chance of happening during the 2022 Halloween Event. However, after the events ended, the chances of that happening were decreased drastically. Despite featuring the Wendigo, the Blood Moon does not have an increased chance of occurring in the 2023 Halloween Event.

Trivia[]

  • During the Sinner's Moon Halloween event, a Blood Moon rose every night.
  • Prior to Version 3.1, the time did not display the exact minute. Instead, it told only the hour.
  • Developers can change the time of day and the speed at which time progresses.
  • The clock faces have 4 marked as "IIII", instead of "IV". Pocket Watches and clocks in the nineteenth century were occasionally produced in this style to save money on producing the numerals.
  • The grandfather clock in the Bronze City Saloon used to have a clockface.
  • An older version of the moon was just a crescent.
  • The darkest time of day is actually the transitional period (around 5:50 AM-5:58 AM), when the sky is plunged into darkness.
  • The American flag atop Auburn Hall features 13 stars, representing 13 states. The U.S.A had only 13 states up to 1791. The closest existing flag is the Cowpens Flag, however the real Cowpens Flag has several more stripes. This is likely asynchronous, or an oversight, as multiple key locations and buildings are marked with establishment dates long after 1791.
